Harmful Habits: 4 Things You Shouldn’t Do With Dentures

Unfortunately, tooth loss can have a negative impact on several aspects of your life – from your diet and ability to communicate clearly to how confident you feel when meeting someone new. There is some good news though: dentures are custom-made for each patient to ensure they look great, feel natural, and function well. Plus, they can last for a decade or more! To prolong the lifespan of yours, avoid the below bad habits.

1. Using an Abrasive Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth and your dentures consistently is crucial when it comes to preventing plaque buildup and keeping your breath minty-fresh. That said, if you use the wrong products or improper technique, you could end up doing more harm than good. One example of that is using normal toothpaste, which has abrasive ingredients that can leave scratches on your denture. That’s why patients are encouraged to use a toothpaste made specifically for dentures as well as a soft-bristled toothbrush.

2. Leaving Your Dentures In While You Sleep

If you have lost a significant number of teeth, you may not want to take your dentures off before you go to bed. However, keeping them on can restrict circulation to your gums, increase your risk of pneumonia, and lead to uncomfortable sores. So, it’s important that you always take them out at night. Placing them in a clean glass filled with a dentist-recommended cleaner will ensure they are clean and fresh come morning too!

3. Not Rinsing With Mouthwash Before Bed

If rinsing with mouthwash before you go to bed (or while getting ready in the morning) isn’t a part of your routine, it should be! There are several noteworthy benefits of doing so, including that it helps prevent plaque build-up, keep your breath fresh, and kill harmful bacteria. So, make sure that you rinse with an ADA-approved one for 30-60 seconds every day.

4. Skipping Your Biannual Dental Checkups and Cleanings

There’s a common misconception that patients with dentures no longer need to visit their dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. That’s not true! Remember, these routine visits ensure they catch tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer in the early stages. Plus, your dental team examines the condition of your denture at each appointment, ensuring it stays in good condition and that, if any minor damage occurs, the necessary repairs are made to keep it that way.
